The Internet has a lot of information on it – pretty much everything you could imagine. Some of that content isn’t very good. In fact, it can be downright offensive. You likely have people in your family who shouldn’t be seeing that kind of content on the Internet, so content filtering might be right for you. It is also an option for business, when they don’t want employees spending valuable time surfing the Internet, when they should be doing work.
With content filtering you can lock out websites that contain certain information. They may have suggestive terms or pictures, it may contain material that is inappropriate for children or young adults of a certain age. Content filtering can protect your children from websites you believe they should not be a part of, and as an employer it can protect your employee from time consuming activities.
Most of the content filtering systems can identify keywords, key phrases, web addresses, or by the meta name or meta tags used on a websites HTML code. When your content filtering program comes across one of these sites, it either blocks the site completely, or it blocks out the affected content.
Content filtering programs can also work by only allowing certain sites to be accessed. You can post a list of websites inside the program that are acceptable and your browser will only allow you to enter those sites. This works great if you only want your kids on appropriate sites, and your employees using sites that are productive for work purposes. If you want to limit the websites that people see on your computer, look for a content filter program to give you the protections you need.
