Many people can claim to be something or someone they are not. Just ask the love-struck twenty-four year old woman who made huge plans to meet her Internet lover, only to find that the good-looking, charming thirty year old chemical engineer she fell in love with is actually a homely 52-year-old unemployed liar. With all these fakers and tricksters out there who are using the Internet to pretend to be something other than what they actually are, there is a way to create your own credibility on the web.
Digital certificates can provide the back up you need to authenticate yourself and your work. This type of electronic document establishes your credentials to anyone who might be doing business with you or carrying out other transactions via the Internet. A certificate authority verifies the holder’s identity and then issues the certificate. This document then holds the proper information: the user’s name, the expiration date, a duplicate of the holder’s public key and the digital signature of the certificate issuer. In many ways, it works like a driver’s license, identity card or passport.
In order to ensure safe communication and transactions on the web, a digital certificate is fast becoming an essential part of the rapidly expanding ecommerce world. Many people won’t do business without them.
