At one time, each classroom in most schools had maybe one or two computers. It was a treat for students to use it. Perhaps, it was used as incentive in other subjects. Maybe if a student scored the highest mark on a test, he or she was allowed a certain amount of time playing a special computer game. There might even have been scheduled times for each student to practice computer skills and learn about other core subjects through specially designed programs.
How times have changed. The computer is now often the most important tool in a classroom. Its resources and purpose in the modern classroom are only surpassed by the teacher’s role. Educational software has become a crucial learning tool for students as young as preschool, and all the way up to adults studying for their doctorates. This type of software helps teachers and students, because it supports both instruction and learning by capitalizing on the power of the computer.
Educational software may come in either a content-free or content-rich format. Content-free software allows the teacher to create the lessons within the software. It’s beneficial because the instructor can tailor what the student is learning on the computer to their own lessons. With content-rich software, the teacher’s lesson is complimented. This is because whatever the students are learning will be added to by the software.
With either approach, education software can enable students to work in groups or independently. Considering all the advantages this can bring students and teachers, who wouldn’t want to use education software in his or her classroom?
