Well, did you learn to share?Portal software puts the sharing principle into practice. In most basic terms, a portal is a web access point. It works by giving your business a network to share. If that’s not simple enough--a portal is a central place where users receive information, or work on and finish tasks. It’s different from the intranet in that it is a work station and not just a means of distributing company information.
Some portal software is designed to craft separate portals for all the divisions in your organization. There could be one portal for the marketing department, another for the customer service department and so on.
So then, why is portal software a good idea? First of all, it is an excellent tool because it makes everyone’s life smoother and more efficient.
Here’s an example: A team member is writing copy for a marketing brochure. A graphic designer is creating the layout for the brochure. The head of the marketing department is overseeing the entire project. The copywriter pulls the words from his brain and channels them through his fingers into his computer. Instead of having to save them on a disk and run them down to the graphic designer’s office, he simply drops them into the marketing portal. The designer snatches them up, and incorporates them into her design. She fires off this first draft to the team leader for his revisions. He looks it over and easily dumps his suggested changes back into the marketing portal. No one ever has to leave their office. However, there is a healthy and extremely productive amount of communication.
