Travel Insurance

Travel insurance provides international health and/or medical coverage, should something happen to you abroad.  Since the domestic insurance plan you have does not always apply for international trips. You should read over your insurance policy or check with your agent to see if travel insurance is included in one of your policies.

Many travel insurance policies include financial protection against injuries, lost baggage, missed flights and interrupted trips. In order to find the travel insurance policy that is right for you, first make a list of what things are important to you while traveling. After that, make a list of what types of activities you will engage in on your trip.  These two factors will help you decide what travel insurance policy is right for you.

Many companies choose to offer travel insurance because it is profitable to do so. They achieve this by assuming the risks that are associated with the entire range of contingencies associated with traveling. Travel insurance companies have to segregate those likely to make higher claims than those who will have lower claims. For example, someone traveling to the Middle East will face greater risks than someone traveling to the United Kingdom, so premiums reflect this.

Another factor to consider with travel insurance is pre-existing conditions.  It is considered riskier for those with pre-existing conditions to travel, and thus travel insurance premiums will be higher.  Risks associated with traveling include death, disability, repatriation and medical expenses.  A pre-existing condition impacts greatly, the risk associated with each of these.
